Eight of the 10 most prevalent active threats currently infesting the web are Trojans, according to Sunbelt Software. The web security company recently released its list of the 10 worst threats. Not only were Trojans in eight of the top 10 spots, but the four top malware strains were all Trojans.
"The old standards continue to circulate online and gain increased penetration whenever Internet use peaks, as with events such as the recent Winter Olympics. Adware and its associated malcode bundlers, downloaders and installers don't make the news much anymore, but collectively they make up 10 percent of our ThreatTrack detections. In the month, ThreatTrack tabulated over 1,100 discrete adware threats," Sunbelt research center manager Tom Kelchnner.
The malware with the most current infections is the Trojan.Win32.Generic!BT, which accounts for more than 33 percent of all infections.
Botnet activity has also increased substantially likely leading the rise in Trojan presence.
Criminal activity on the web has been especially dangerous in 2010. According to F-Secure, attacks similar to the one that penetrated Google in January are on pace to double. There have been 895 such breaches in 2010 after 2,195 reported in 2009.
