The FBI recently confirmed that all cloud computing companies that sell to United States law enforcement agencies need to comply with the FBI's Criminal Justice Information Services security requirements. Some vendors may have a hard time doing this, the FBI said, but it is not willing to compromise any security.

"The FBI remains committed to using technology in its information-sharing processes, but not at the sacrifice of the security of the information with which it has been entrusted," Stephen Fischer Jr., a spokesman for the FBI's CJIS division told Computerworld.

Computerworld points out that these comments come just two months after Los Angeles Police had to cancel a migration to the cloud due to security worries and the Google cloud not being compliant with CJIS requirements. Google said these requirements are not compatible with cloud computing and present a big challenge to any vendor.

Any company or agency looking to make its way into a cloud computing solution may not need this same set of standards, but they should have some policies in place that will ensure the safety of their valuable information.
