Cloud computing expected to get 'crazier' next year
-
12/13/2011
With the advent of cloud computing among government agencies, David Roe writes on CMS Wire that he believes the industry will be crazier than ever in 2012.
The White House's move into the cloud, which has led to the elimination of much of the legacy IT system the government operates on, will create a new set of security rules and new ways of looking at things, Roe writes on the website.
"This has been in the works for a long time and many of the bigger cloud computing bruisers have been waiting around to see what they produce before launching a full-scale assault on Washington," Roe said. "But it's not just the White House or all the bureaucrats up there in Washington that are being targeted; these guidelines affect the entire federal IT infrastructure across all federal agencies."
Federal CIO Steven VanRoekel said the cloud has saved taxpayers about $1 billion and will continue to be a cost-cutting tool, according to the news source.
Gus Hunt, the CIA's chief technology officer, was quoted in InformationWeek as saying cloud computing allows the government to quickly patch and fix security aspects of government IT. The news source said many government officials believe the cloud is a much safer environment than conventional IT setups.
