The rapid growth of mobile technology has been both a blessing and a curse to today's businesses; though they are now able to access information - and work - anytime and anywhere, these new technologies have presented an even higher security need for data, platform, connection and network management.

Indeed, new research suggests that businesses are having a hard time keeping up with the increasing use of mobile technology in the enterprise.

In a trend that is likely seen in the U.S. and elsewhere, a recent survey from Sybase found that more than two-thirds of European organizations surveyed are not fully aware of what sensitive data is stored in their employees' mobile devices.

Furthermore, just 15 percent are sure that they would be legally protected if an employee's mobile device is lost or stolen and the company information is exposed.

"These figures show there is a continued lack of central management of mobile devices within enterprises," said Martin Karlowitsch, Sybase director of field marketing for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. "To ensure the enterprise is protected from any mobile threat, intentional or unintentional, organizations need to ensure that mobility policies are as stringent as their wider IT security and management initiatives."

Mobile technology - especially in the cloud computing sector - has been identified as one of the most up-and-coming new sectors of the IT industry, as an increasing number of employees - dubbed "road-warriors" - need to access their information remotely.
