As the cloud computing and software-as-a-service (SaaS) markets continue to rapidly expand, the question of security has become an increasingly popular - and important - issue.

As a result, companies that carve out a niche in the cloud computing security market are likely to do particularly well, as this sector has become even more in-demand as cloud computing grows.

A recent study from Trend Micro found that, of the IT decision makers and CIOs surveyed, almost nine in ten - 89 percent - specifically look for in-the-cloud protection when choosing an IT security solution.

Furthermore, approximately 40 percent of respondents said they would only consider security solutions that include in-the-cloud threat intelligence.

"'Cloud computing' is almost synonymous with 'cloud security' because you can't have one without the other," said Thomas Miller, general manager of the enterprise business unit at Trend Micro. "If corporations are going to rely on the internet cloud to store data and conduct business, they would also want superior security designed for in-the-cloud protection."

In addition to in-the-cloud security services, virtual private networks and private clouds have emerged as potential solutions to security concerns, which studies have found is the primary barrier of cloud computing adoption.
