Online traffic is growing by the day as more organizations and consumers are using the internet. One area that may need to improve as momentum for cloud based services, mobile devices and more grows is the network infrastructure companies rely on. Network World reported that a panel discussion at the Interop discussion featured IDC researchers saying that with the shift to the cloud and other similar technology has brought, organizations must update the scalability their network gives them.

Of the reasons networks need to be more scalable and flexible, mobile may be the biggest. IDC researchers on the panel said while 45 percent of enterprise employees brought their own devices to work in 2010, and that number has risen to two-thirds. Many employees end up bringing three to four devices to work, with a prediction from IDC that there will be 30 billion connected devices by 2020.

Video applications and increased interest in cloud computing solutions will also create more traffic these networks will have to handle. IDC found that 68 percent of spending will be on in-house IT services this year, but that will drop to 62 percent in two years as these organizations start to invest in cloud based services and updated virtualized networks.

Brad Casemore, IDC research director for data center networks, said these issues have shown the limitations of networks today. Businesses may have to adopt software defined networking, a tool which helps decouple firmware from the network's physical infrastructure, to keep everything running smoothly.

"SDN is a network approach that's arisen to support the needs to cloud computing, virtualization and multi-tenancy," Casemore said. "Workloads have changed - there is more virtual traffic, which has necessitated the need for a lot more flexibility in the data center."

Cisco reported earlier this year that monthly global mobile traffic will exceed 10 exabytes by 2017, with the number of connected devices becoming greater than the world's population by the end of this year. Mobile device management may become key for organizations, as the increased use in smartphones will mean these gadgets will take up more than 50 percent of mobile data traffic in 2013. As a positive, the report also said mobile network connection speeds will increase sevenfold by 2017, showing that Cisco believes companies will adapt to changing times.
