When moving to adopt cloud based services as a company, the CIO has a few areas of the business that must be looked at to ensure everything will work well, according to what Vijay Sethi, vice president of information systems and CIO of Hero MotoCorp, wrote on InformationWeek.

"Firstly, fully understand the concept and implications of cloud computing before taking a decision whether to maintain an IT investment in-house or whether to buy it as a service through the cloud - and for that to happen even the service providers need to understand the concept fully," he said.

After this, Sethi said companies must:
- Look at the return on investment they would likely get from the cloud
- Evaluate what service levels are offered by the provider and which works best
- See which implementation would be most effective
- Change culture and the organizations mindset to better understand the cloud

Information-Management said cloud computing solutions should come in steps, first deploying low risks projects, then back-office support. After this, modernizing core applications and creating new services should help a business evolve how it works with the technology.
