Fleming College in Ontario, Canada recently suffered a failure to its backup systems, resulting in theloss of numerous student grades, the Peterborough Examiner reports.

Because of the backup malfunction, many staff members have had to quickly find hard copies of their pupils’ grades to avoid prolonging the end of the summer semester.

Construction projects on campus have led to myriad power outages throughout the college, and was the trigger for the incident. One outage knocked the learning management system offline, resulting in lost data files, the Examiner relays.

Many schools and businesses have looked to the cloud as an online backup solution to protect against server failures or on-premise power outages. Companies and universities that keep all of their valuable material stored on the same server or at the same location risk losing their data in one full swoop.

Cloud computing services offer users numerous benefits, including scalability, cost savings and more flexibility. Companies that deploy an online backup solution in the cloud, generally have the option to copy important files every 15 minutes and have immediate access to information if a crisis strikes.ADNFCR-2553-ID-19910062-ADNFCR
