The Information and communications technologies sector has been criticized for contributing large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions, according to an Eco-Business report.

Although emissions have increased as data centers have grown, experts say new technology has allowed other industries to decrease their energy output at a far greater amount than what ICTs are adding, the report stated.

The Client Group recently released a report identifying different ways ICTs can reduce carbon emissions, estimating the sector can lower overall output by five times its own footprint, Eco-business relays.

The report marked cloud computing as a growing service that has been able to decrease overall carbon emissions. Companies that implement the new technology are able to reduce their energy costs by becoming more efficient. Instead of paying large sums of money to build and maintain their own data center, businesses depend on an outside company to run their network; thus, organizations spend less energy on infrastructure and maintenance.

Organizations no longer have to pay for software that may sit on shelves or constantly upgrade to new versions. With cloud computing, many businesses use a pay-as-you-go model that offers more flexibility and scalability, so companies can efficiently expand or downsize whenever they need to.ADNFCR-2553-ID-19862138-ADNFCR
