The recently released Broadband Barometer survey found many companies are interested in cloud computing but have no plans to use the technology for data backup.

The study, which surveyed 369 small- to medium-sized businesses, found 60 percent of companies intend to implement cloud services, though 43 percent said they do not plan to deploy online backup.

Vu-Thanh Nguyen, a research analyst at AMI-Partners, told ZDNet companies that overlook online backup risk are losing valuable data.

“Businesses would be in a much safer position to have two separate internet connections connected through a simple solution like a dual-WAN router,” Nguyen said.

To form the Pacnet Broadband Barometer survey, researchers conducted 30-minute phone surveys with companies ranging in size from five employees to 999 employees.

Although the survey’s results are not promising for the online backup market, one reason that may account for the low totals could be a lack of understanding. A recent report found only 37 percent of small businesses had heard of cloud computing and its services. As businesses become more aware of the benefits of the cloud, many may begin looking at the technology as a solution for their backup needs.ADNFCR-2553-ID-19901852-ADNFCR
