Despite reports that businesses of all sizes are still reducing IT costs, Microsoft reported on Wednesday that sales for Windows 7 have risen to 90 million licenses sold worldwide. Increased sales have also led to further demand from retailers.
Thirty million copies of the latest operating system from Microsoft have sold since the end of 2009, and the company believes small businesses are among the fastest-growing of its sectors. Following the release of Windows Vista, companies chose to stay with Windows XP as the switch was not viewed as much of an upgrade.
The features of Windows 7, however, have made network management and desktop security increasingly simple.
"Windows 7 is growing incredibly fast right now for us," Microsoft vice president Brad Brooks said. "We are sitting in a very different position than where we have been in the last three years."
The Mineral Wells Index, a newspaper in Mineral Wells, Texas, reported on Thursday that Microsoft has urged users to update their PCs to Windows 7 quickly. The company will cease production of Windows Vista on April 13 and security updates for its older operating systems will likely become unavailable in the near future.
