This comes as Gartner, a leading research and advisory firm, released a prediction that by 2012, 20 percent of companies will have no ownership of IT assets as they continue to outsource IT to the cloud, Media Post reported.

"What we're trying to do is provide a common framework for agencies to put in their information," MeriTalk founder Steve O'Keeffe told InformationWeek.

The calculator is highly customizable; each firm can input any variables pertinent to their IT habits. Organizations with highly sensitive information will, according to MeriTalk, be less likely to see substantial savings due to hesitance to move their holdings entirely into the cloud.

"Some environments are just not cloud-able, based on the sensitivity of the data and so on," O'Keeffe said.

"What we're trying to do is provide a common framework for agencies to put in their information."

Gartner also reports that this shift will help organizations in their efforts to jump on the green bandwagon, according to Media Post. According to Gartner, 60 percent of a computer's consumption of fossil fuels occurs during production and transportation of the device. As organizations use fewer computers in house, their emission of greenhouse gasses will decrease accordingly.
