Media content at the forefront of cloud computing
-
09/03/2010
With companies like Apple, Google and Netflix turning to cloud-based technology to store their media, content may be becoming the primary driver behind the cloud computing movement.
In a recent article for InfoWeek, David Linthicum argues that the use of virtualization for storage by major music and video companies makes the best display of the cloud's current use and potential.
These companies are building large server storage facilities that create a virtualization platform from which they can reach millions of costumers with content.
While these services are not strictly using IaaS or SaaS tools, Linthicum believes that their widespread success shows how much can be achieved by companies who will use true clouds.
Media content is therefore pushing corporations to take advantage of the potential profits that virtualization can offer.
According to Forbes, the success of cloud implementation will depend in part on how well companies develop security protocol to deal with mobile workers. Personnel using their mobile devices are forced to hop from network to network as they move. Subsequently, items on the cloud are put at risk.
Forbes points out that while this is a bit of a nuisance, it can be controlled by well established policies to make sure users are only using secure connections.
